NOAA Human Resources - Distinguished Career Awards Page Heading

Go to: 2005 Distinguished Career Awards Recipients

The Distinguished Career Award is designed to recognize long-term achievement in advancing the goals and mission of NOAA. In 2003, NOAA launched a one-year pilot phase of the Career Awards. Ten winners were announced in October 2003, concluding the pilot phase. A review of the program found that the program needed to increase the occupational diversity of the applicant pool. As a result, the Career Awards policy was changed to require the selection of one of five occupational categories when nominating an individual for a Career Award. These five categories are:

1. Management and Supervision
2. Scientific Achievement
3. Professional Achievement
4. Administrative or Technical Support
5. Clerical/Support Services

A maximum of fifteen Career Awards winners will be selected annually. Two winners will be selected from each category with five additional recipients selected "at-large."

The intent of the Career Award is to honor contributions which represent sustained excellence--rather than a single, defined accomplishment. This award stands in contrast to the Department’s Honor Awards program which recognizes specific contributions as opposed to cumulative career achievements over an extended period of time.
