SUBJECT:                      NOAA’s Emergency Notification System

To improve NOAA’s ability to safeguard and better inform NOAA employees, contractors, and associates about emergency events--either man-made or natural--directly impacting NOAA facilities and operations, NOAA is introducing the NOAA Emergency Notification System (ENS).

The NOAA ENS, which is a system similar to those introduced by numerous universities to manage campus-wide emergency situations, will undergo an initial pilot starting in January 2010.  The pilot will include the National Ocean Service (NOS) staff nationally and all NOAA staff in the National Capital Region (NCR), NOAA-wide implementation is planned for Fall of 2010.

The NOAA ENS relies on emergency contact information (i.e., phone and email) voluntarily provided by each employee to disseminate emergency-event messages. The NOAA Staff Directory (NSD) has been modified so each employee can enter emergency contact information: cell phone (work and personal), alternate land line numbers, email addresses.  In the event of an emergency that warrants notification requiring employee action (e.g., avoiding or exiting a building or complex, sheltering-in-place), the NOAA ENS will use the contact information to send alert messages employees.  If an employee decides not to provide emergency contact information in NSD, the NOAA ENS will send emergency messages only to the employee’s work email and work phone number already contained in NSD.  Obviously, for the NOAA ENS to be most effective, having alternate phone and email information from an employee is important.

A new page within NSD that allows NOAA staff to voluntarily provide alternate emergency contact information is now available.  The information entered on this page can only be viewed by the employee who entered it and will only be used by the automated NOAA ENS during an emergency.  You are encouraged to update your profile at the NSD located at: https://nsd.rdc.noaa.gov/nsd/moreinfo
